Should I Go to University of Florida Andrew earned his bachelors degree in entomology and nematology from the University of Florida. He specializes in science tutoring, biology tutoring, math tutoring, and numerous other subjects. If youre interested in attending the University of Florida, read on for his review: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Andrew: The University of Florida is located in the center of Gainesville, and has a more rural feel as you move away from town. The bus is the only option for public transportation. It is very good on campus, and runs well enough near campus; in truth, it is much easier to get around town with a car or bicycle. On campus, however, it is easier to get around on foot or bicycle due to the volume of student traffic. As with any city, Gainesville has good areas and bad areas. That being said, the main campus and midtown are generally very safe, well lit, and enjoy a reasonable police presence, even at night. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Andrew: The faculty and staff are world class, and second to none in terms of supportiveness for their students, availability, and teaching ability. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Andrew: Dorm life was good while I lived there, although room quality varied substantially from one building to the next. For instance, some dorms had central AC that was always ice cold, others had window mounted units, and some had no AC whatsoever. All of the dorms are on campus and very close to most classrooms. Additionally, dining options are plentiful on and near campus, especially near midtown. Every dorm in which I lived would arrange social activities for the students, especially first-years, including massive water balloon fights, a volleyball and wrestling mudpit, and even eating contests. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Andrew: I began as a Biology major before switching to Entomology Nematology. I found that I had a great passion for studying insects, which are very diverse in the state of Florida. Most majors are quite well supported; I never had any difficulty scheduling time to meet with advisors or teachers any time I needed. UF provides great resources available for students who need help studying. One of my friends was a Mechanical Engineering major and used these frequently. He had nothing but good things to say about the campus tutoring sessions. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Andrew: When I entered college, I was painfully shy, and yet I seemed to have no difficulties in meeting great people during my first year as a student. The friends I made during freshman year are still very good friends even to this day. Most students are not involved in Greek life; however, with the very large number of students attending UF, there is a sizable Greek population. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Andrew: With a reputation as being the Harvard of the South, the University of Florida attracts top companies for recruitment of its graduates. I have seen and attended numerous recruitment fairs at UF. Additionally, most students in my major were made aware of job openings through departmental email or other avenues. I can attest firsthand to how these resources helped me to secure highly desirable positions in my field. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Andrew: Study areas can sometimes be quite crowded due to the number of students at the university, especially during exams. Generally, though, the libraries and study areas are more than adequate in terms of space. Furthermore, the libraries are located close to the main area of campus, and are easy to access. Describe the surrounding town. Andrew: There is something for everyone in Gainesville. Because UF is located in central Florida, the surrounding towns are quite rural. There are numerous small natural preserves and parks near UF, most with great hiking trails and places to go camping, fishing, and hunting. One of my personal favorite places to go was Lake Wauburg, where there is a small beach. At the lake there are sailboats, kayaks, and paddle boats that can be taken out with a student ID. There is also a disk golf course, a climbing wall, and beach volleyball courts. There is a busy (but modestly sized) midtown and slightly larger downtown, with plenty of variety in terms of nightlife, music, and dining. Both of these areas are relatively close to campus, and are regularly frequented by students. Pool parties hosted by local radio stations are very common in the larger apartment complexes during the warmer months. For those who enjoy sports, the home games for the Florida Gators can be a great time; alumni, students, and fans come from miles around to tailgate and see the games! How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Andrew: The size of the student body is over 50,000 students. This is a very large number of people concentrated in a campus that is two miles square, with most classes concentrated in a cluster of buildings probably one square mile in area. Many of the general, lower-level courses had 200-300 students; in fact, I did take one class that had 500 students in a massive auditorium. Once I got through these, my upper-division classes were typically much smaller, especially in my entomology courses. I personally preferred these smaller classes, but I never felt that the professors of the larger classes were inaccessible or impersonal toward their students. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Andrew: The class I enjoyed the most was a course on insect classification. I still chuckle to think of how drastically this one class changed the course of my life. I was just out of my sophomore year and had just added entomology as a minor, thinking that it would help to beef up an application to medical school. Part of the course involved building a sizeable insect collection. Many students hated this part of the class because it was very time consuming and involved handling live insects; I ate it up. One day, as I was returning from a collecting trip, I found myself musing; thinking: I wish I could do this for the rest of my life. The next day I changed my major to entomology and never looked back. Now, some seven years later, I am pursuing a PhD studying the evolutionary biology and biomechanics of insects, and loving every minute of it. In this article, music teacher Anthony S. discusses the differences between the two instruments, as well as how to choose which one is right for you.   Ukulele vs Guitar: Key Differences Transitioning From Ukulele to Guitar As a music teacher, I have been asked by many parents over the years if learning to play the ukulele is a good starting point for children who want to learn the guitar. The ukulele is a very good first instrument, however it must be considered as a real instrument and not an introductory instrument that is generally easy to play. Even though the ukulele is a fretted string instrument, it is a completely different instrument than the guitar. I have observed in the course of my career a great many students actually find it challenging to transition from the ukulele to guitar. This is because the ukulele and guitar are tuned differently and the process of learning the ukulele does not translate directly to the guitar. The Size of the Ukulele vs Guitar There is also an obvious size difference between the ukulele vs the guitar. I often discourage students from jumping into the ukulele just because of its size. If youd prefer learning on a smaller instrument to start, there are dozens of options available for smaller guitars. So whichever instrument you decide on, its important to make sure youre choosing the right ukulele or guitar for you. Choosing the right instrument and the right size for a beginning musician is the first piece of advice that I give all students. I have been challenged many times whilst trying to teach students who are using an instrument that was purchased as a gift, for example. Oftentimes children receive a ukulele as a gift from a relative that is simply impractical and counterproductive to proper education. Pro tip: Its always a good idea to consult with an experienced teacher before investing in an instrument. Which instrument do you prefer: ukulele or guitar? Ukulele Guitar View Results Loading ... Playing Comfort Many students are concerned about whether theyll be more comfortable playing the ukulele vs the guitar. Besides the evident small size of the standard soprano ukulele, the soft nylon strings are also great draw for many students with delicate fingers. But if you want to learn the guitar, you could always start with a classical guitar that has nylon strings, and be just fine.  Even if you dont want to play classical music, you should never purchase an electric guitar as your first instrument. Youd be surprised at how  many students quit their lessons because the correct instrument wasn’t selected! Final Advice Ultimately, when deciding between the ukulele vs guitar, either instrument is an excellent choice if the student is focused on learning it. Practice every day and you WILL succeed. Also, be sure  to find a great music teacher to work with. Finding an experienced  ukulele instructor or guitar teacher  will help you build a solid foundation for your musical journey. You don’t need to be the loudest to influence people. Take Gandhi, Einstein, Bill Gates or even Richard Branson. (Check out his story about overcoming his introversion here.) The best way to become influential as an introvert is to leverage your communication skills. You don’t have to put an extrovert mask and talk over people to make their point in order to become a great leader. But focusing on listening to people will give you a great advantage over extroverts and become emotionally intelligent. Extroverts are often outgoing, socially confident and like get their message across. But they can also lack listening skills and empathy. Introverts, on the other hand, are great listeners. Instead, asking the right questions and listen carefully to their answer will help you connect better with clients, co-workers and even total strangers. Questions that you pose will give you valuable information to facilitate discussions and the strategic outcome of your conversation. If you ask the right questions, people will open up to you. If people open up to you, you will build rapport and earn their trust. Once you earn their trust, you will be able to influence people and get their buy-in easily and effortlessly. Invite people to chat in your ideal environment. It’s important to feel comfortable when you are presenting to people. And if you feel uncomfortable in your setting, change the environment to one that you prefer. This might see you request a one on one meeting or to do a virtual chat over the telephone or computer. Whatever the setting is, make sure it is one that you are happy with. Let strategic signs do the communicating for you. An introvert friend of mine had a store in a conference and couldn’t put himself to engage with a stranger. As an alternative, he invested in a sign that would attract people to his business. The sign simply said, “Do you need to feed your hunger?”He didn’t have to actively engage with strangers, but instead invited them to approach him with clever use of his signage. This can be done with the use of signwriting, lightboxes or even neon signs. Even though this was done in a business setting, the same concept can be applied when being a vendor at a conference or attending a trade show. Let go of any expectations. Don’t get hung up on the expectation that you feel that others should have of you. Instead, focus on delivering what you want to say with boldness and confidence. Leadership is not about being vocal. Leadership is about decisively being vocal when you have weighed pros and cons. When comes a time when you have to speak up but don’t feel like it. That doesn’t mean that you have to become more extrovert. It only means that from time to time, you must come out from your comfort zone when you have been applying the previous advice. There are some times when asking questions and listening is not enough and you have to voice your opinions. In this case, let go of fear and voice your opinions. Susan J. Jeffers says in her book “Feel the fear and do it anyway”; that you can handle anything that comes your way. Your coworker interrupted you while you were making a point, don’t dwell on it. Take the habit that when you need to make a point, do it! You will see that it will get easier and easier over time. Introverts don’t have to be outshone by extroverts. There are different ways to become influential and to share the same spotlight and recognition that extroverts work towards as well. Remember, it is about creating an opportunity for dialogue and making an impact. And it doesn’t just happen by being the loudest one in the room. Author bio. Singing Lessons Before and After [Best Transformation Videos] Jessica Dais The transformation in vocal students before and after singing lessons is truly inspiring.  As a singing teacher, it really is amazing to watch students learn to do everything from match pitches to mix belt like a Broadway star. Have you ever wondered what you would sound like if you took voice lessons? Although every singer’s results will be different, YouTube has a variety of before and after singing lessons videos, so you can hear the typical results of vocal study. These three transformation videos leave no doubt: voice lessons definitely work! Singing Lessons: Before and After Troy Donavan’s Singing Transformation In Troy’s older videos, one thing stands out immediately: his significant jaw tension. It almost looks like he is holding something in his mouth, and he is afraid that if he opens his mouth too wide, something will fall out. Try to notice his masseter muscles clenching as he sings. In addition to the jaw tension, his muffled, uncomfortable tone suggests tongue and throat tension. Now check out this second video. Even by watching Troy’s “after singing lessons” videos without sound, it’s obvious that he’s starting to relax his jaw and open his mouth more while singing. His face looks much more comfortable, and forming words looks much easier. His tone is also clearer and has lost that muffled quality, suggesting that the tongue and throat tension he struggled with has largely dissolved. Congratulations, Troy! This is truly an inspiring singing transformation. Polina Lesik’s Singing Transformation Polina Lesik is a professional singer from Russia. Although her video does include some footage of live performances, most of the older clips are audio only. Even so, the difference in technique is abundantly apparent. In the older singing clips, Polina’s singing shows significant pitch problems. While she was always in the ballpark of the correct pitches, she was off just enough to give the singing an amateur quality. She also exhibited no vibrato in the early years. However, she was studying classical voice during that time, and by 2007 (as exhibited at 3:11 in the video), her head voice technique had markedly improved. She was also showing better pitch accuracy and vibrato. Even still, Polina was not working on her chest voice technique yet, and that showed in her singing. While her head voice was improving, her chest voice technique from the same period sounds forced and thick. This sounds like a result of tension in the throat and tongue. It wasn’t until 2010, when Polina again started studying with a voice teacher (this time for jazz voice), that her rock and pop sound improved. The forced sound disappeared, and she was left with greater pitch accuracy, steady vibrato, and a clearer timbre in both her chest and head registers. Her later videos also exhibit an ability to mix her chest and head voice (called modal voice) in order to hit belted high notes without any strain. Great job, Polina! Rached Hayek’s Singing Transformation Rached Hayek is a singer and songwriter from Sydney, Australia. This video’s “before” example is a cell phone recording that doesn’t include video. But just like with Polina, the noticeable difference is enormous. The song in both the “before” and “after” recordings is “Walking Away” by Craig David, sung a cappella. In the “before” recording, Rached’s tone is pleasant, and it’s clear that he has talent. However, he was not able to successfully navigate the runs and register changes in the song. When he tried to change notes rapidly, he went out of tune, and because he was singing a cappella, this threw the whole song off balance. In addition, his runs slid together, at times resembling a vocal slide rather than individual notes. The “after” recording tells a different story. The runs are now clean and distinct, each note precise. As a result, even without a back track, Rached is able to stay in tune. Wonderful work, Rached! Lisa Phillips has volunteered as a tutor with Heart Tutoring for five years.She was drawn to the organizations mission and the impact it makes in the community.Having often heard the common phrase, “I am not a math person”, Lisa believes that you “don’t need to have anxiety about math if taught correctly”. Global Endowment Management (GEM)gave Heart Math Tutoring one of its first school sponsorship grants of$50,000 in 2014 to open a site at Westerly Hills Academy, which has since seen significant math proficiency growth.
